Heirloom Seeds: Biodiversity, Belonging, and the Seed Keeper's Role, Friday, December 5, 9:00 AM

Stephen Smith is a seed keeper, poet, high school educator, and passionate advocate for biodiversity and community healing. Based in Guthrie, Kentucky, he blends storytelling, sustainable agriculture, and ancestral seed stewardship to reconnect people with the land and with themselves. As a lifelong gardener and teacher, Stephen has preserved rare Southern heirloom vegetables and worked to pass on seed-saving knowledge rooted in cultural memory and ecological resilience. His work centers on the belief that seeds are not just tools for growing foodβ€”they are living vessels of identity, history, and hope. Through speaking engagements, writing, and workshops, Stephen uplifts the sacred relationships between people, plants, and place.
