Community Agreements

We aim to create a safe and inclusive environment where every person can learn, share, and be in community together. We ask all participants to engage others mindfully, with respect and humility. All conference participants agree to abide by the following agreements:

Respect

  • Respect the identities, backgrounds, and boundaries of others. Be open to different perspectives and experiences.

Nonviolence

  • There is zero tolerance for violence – including physical and verbal threats, bullying, sexual harassment, assault, relational aggression, and intimidation.

  • “Attack problems not people.”  Listen and change your behavior if someone tells you it is causing harm.

Call in, not out

  • When someone behaves in a way that challenges your values, do your best to invite them into awareness rather than dismissing, shaming, or shunning them.  Don’t be a bystander – support others in upholding our agreements. You don’t have to “call in” alone – facilitators can support or do it for you.

Listening

  • Actively listen. Be open and respect different opinions, experiences, and learning styles. Ask questions before assuming. The best way to understand the choices, actions, or intentions of one another is by asking.

Sharing

  • Share knowledge and skills with our community. No one knows everything, but together we know a lot. Be aware of your prejudices and privileges and allow space for all voices. Use “I” statements rather than generalizations.

Take space / make space

  • Take space for yourself in conversation if you tend to be quiet, make space for quieter voices if you tend to speak often.

Be conscious of intent vs. impact

  • We are each responsible for the impact of our words and actions. We may not always get it right. If harm occurs, we commit to addressing it with care, humility, and openness.

Self care

  • Practice self care. Be patient with yourself. Take breaks as needed.
