Water Without Irrigation: Dry Land Farming and Market Gardening
Jeff Poppen, Barefoot Farmer
Saturday, December 5, 2:00 PM · Room 318
Combining traditional dryland farming practices with modern scientific research can help Tennessee farmers and gardeners improve soil health, conserve moisture, and build resilience to drought. In this session, Jeff will explore techniques for improving water infiltration and retention, including building stable clay-humus complexes, fall tillage, cover cropping, liming, composting, harrowing, and shallow cultivation. Participants will also learn how practices such as keyline plowing, mulching, hilling, and crop rotation can work together to create more drought-resilient farms and gardens, even in regions receiving 40–50 inches of annual rainfall.
