The "STEM in the Garden" workshop, developed by the Ujamaa Seed Teachers working group and presented by Diane Fisher, Anna Gilbert-Mohammed, Antonio Brazelton, is a 60-minute interactive session designed to help youth reconnect with the land, water, and soil through hands-on exploration and learning. Participants engage in a variety of activities such as creating newspaper pots, using smartphone microscopes to examine roots, measuring soil porosity, and exploring the garden’s microbiome with specialized meters, all while following a practical handout to guide their experiences. The session also includes a slide presentation that highlights ways to engage youth in these enriching STEM-based activities, fostering both curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
